The stable population of Caransebes was of 2890 inhabitants (from which 2085 were Romanians) in 1873, at the beginning of the 20th century the city had 6500 inhabitants and had a continuous growth – 10089 (in the year 1930), 15733 (1956), 18838 (1966), 27190 (1977), 31985 (1992).

Lately Caransebes knows a small decrease of its inhabitant’s number (like the general tendency of population evolution in the county).

In March 2002, the city’s population easily exceeded 28000 inhabitants.

Structural, 92% of the inhabitants are Romanians, Germans, Ukrainians and Gypsies represent each 2%, 1% Hungarians, and the remaining 1% are Czechs, Serbians, Slovakians and others.
